Looks like we may get an early reprieve on those incessant “iDon’t” Droid commercials. It’s difficult to tempt and tease the public’s smartphone lust when you tip all the details of your new release on your website. Motorola did just that when it published a pretty comprehensive rundown of the Droid. It has since fixed the mistake, but not before the blog world got a hold of it. As an avid baseball fan, I hope to now enjoy A-Rod’s continued post-season dominance iDon’t free. I’m sure I’m not so lucky, however.

The “pint-sized power plant” that is sure to make a name for its “app mashing and multitasking” features a 3.7-inch 16:9 screen with 480 x 854 res, 550 MHz processor, preinstalled 16-gig microSD card and 5MP camera with 4x zoom and dual-LED flash. You’ll also get your 802.11b/g Wi Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Unfortunately, Motorola was able to keep the price and availablity under wraps.

Yet another phone claiming to be a serious iPhone competitor, the Droid advertising campaign has launched an open assault on iPhone for some of its lacking features– real keyboard, 5 MP camera, interchangeable batteries, etc. We’ll see if this one has any more success in grabbing iPhone turf than the score of others that have failed to present a serious challenge.

Here’s a shocker: The New York Times has been working closely with gadget makers to get its content onto new platforms, and one of those devices is the Apple tablet. Speaking at an all-hands meeting at the TimesCenter, executive editor Bill Keller spoke of new strategies for the digital age, but here’s the quote you care about: “I’m hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate, or whatever comes after that.” The speech was supposed to be off the record, but now it’s online and can’t be taken back. Still, it’s surprising that Keller acknowledged the Apple tablet’s existence to the Times’ entire digital group.

Of course, Keller’s remarks bring us no closer to knowing what the tablet is (aside from a large-screen multi-touch device), when it will be released or how much it’ll cost. “Impending” is a relative term no matter how urgent it sounds. I do wonder, however, whether Keller meant the “Apple slate” or the “Apple Slate.” It’s not a term I’ve heard in the tech world, but for what it’s worth, “Slate” isn’t a bad name for the product
